The White House Historical Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the White House, the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. As a dynamic organization committed to education and cultural enrichment, we are seeking an intern to support our popular virtual History Happy Hour series. History Happy Hour is an engaging and educational program that explores the rich history of the White House through a mix of talks, presentations, and discussions. Episodes run every other Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Position Description:

We are looking for a passionate and organized intern to assist with the planning, promotion, and execution of our History Happy Hour series. This internship is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in history, event planning, and public engagement to contribute to our mission and gain valuable experience in the field.

Responsibilities:

1. Event Planning and Execution:

  • Assist in the coordination and execution of virtual History Happy Hour events, held bi-weekly on Thursday evenings.
  • Work with the program manager to schedule speakers, plan event topics, and manage logistics.
  • Assist with technical setup and support during virtual events, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for participants and speakers.
  • Compile episode attendance figures and report to Development colleagues.

2. Promotion and Marketing:

  • Contribute to the development of promotional materials, including social media posts, email newsletters, and event listings.
  • Engage with the White House Historical Association's social media platforms to increase event visibility and engagement.
  • Create compelling content related to History Happy Hour.

3. Audience Engagement:

  • Interact with event attendees, answering questions, facilitating discussions, and providing information about the White House Historical Association during live Zoom episodes.
  • Collect feedback from participants and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of the series.

4. Research and Content Development:

  • Conduct research on historical topics related to the White House to support event planning and content creation.
  • Assist in creating engaging and informative event materials, such as presentations and background information.

Department: Development Office

Location: Washington, D.C. Opportunities to be in office during normal business hours with flexibility for remote work (in particular on Thursday evenings when the program runs)

Hours: 10 hours per week (hours are generally flexible, though availability on Thursday evenings is required)

Duration: This internship will begin immediately and last through the spring semester, with potential to extend through the summer and beyond

Position Type: Paid Internship - $17.50 per hour

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., history, museum studies, communications, event planning).
  • Strong interest in American history and the history of the White House.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with virtual event platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Ability to learn marketing tools and database systems (e.g., Salesforce, Pardot).
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital marketing is a plus.
