Change the Course of History

Join one of our premier giving circles to ensure White House history is more than just a remnant of the past.

who we are

The White House Historical Association was founded in 1961 out of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s efforts to transform the White House into a historical museum. In just over a year, Mrs. Kennedy – with the support of a few prominent individuals — turned The Executive Mansion into a showcase of American artwork and craftsmanship. We continue to promote Mrs. Kennedy’s vision for the People’s House, and provide the funds to protect its objects, preserve its interiors, and ensure public access to its living history.

To provide these funds we rely entirely on private donations — the White House does not allot public money to pay for its own historic preservation.

how we do it

  • Protect

We fund the acquisition and protection of historically significant artwork, furniture, china, and other household items for the White House’s permanent collection.

  • Preserve

We assist in the preservation and periodic renovation of White House interiors, and commission the official portraits of both the President and the First Lady.

  • Provide

We provide meaningful connection to the White House through our publications, educational programs, digital image library, exhibits, and the White House Visitors Center.
