The Washington Collection: Camp Stool
In May 1776, George Washington was charged for three linen marquees and "18 wallnut camp stools, moreen, brass nails, girth, tack & bottoming" by the Philadelphia merchant and upholsterer Irish emigre Plunket Fleeson. Of the "1/2 doz Camp seats" purchased by the Thomas and Martha Peter at the estate sale, only two exist today; one at Tudor Place and the other at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. Tudor Place was the Washington, D.C., home of Thomas and Martha Custis Peter. Martha Custis Peter was First Lady Martha Washington's granddaughter.
