Julia Grant
Julia Dent Grant and Ulysses S. Grant entered the White House with their four children. As hostess, Mrs. Grant was the center of Washington society, and she filled the White House calendar with social functions meant to include as many people as possible. Her receptions were even open to African Americans, though none came. She was the first president's wife to give interviews to reporters about the house and its events. Above all, Mrs. Grant loved the White House, and cried when she left the "dear old house".
